Burgess's sincere interest in writers of the modernist era can be justified not only by his personal passion for the literary movement, but also by the important role of the Eliotic tradition for the generation of 1950-1960s. For Burgess's generation, T.S. Eliot was perceived primarily as an important literary figure who defined and “transformed” the standards of literature, largely influenced by his critical works. In this paradigm, the movement of modernism can be perceived as a view developed under the influence of the turning point after the First World War. This study will delve into the tradition in which Eliot played a significant role, particularly in relation to Burgess's modernist poetics. It is of particular significance for examiners of the modernism poetics in Burgess's work. At the same time, an important part of the study is the consideration of the reception of high modernism, which allows us to consider Eliot as the creator of a tradition, the motives of whose oeuvre are also noticeable in the works of his followers. From the results obtained, we can conclude that Burgess's works largely inherit the features developed by Eliot during the formation of the modernist movement. It is important for us to emphasize the deep connection between the views of Burgess's generation and the Eliotic tradition.
