This thesis explores the impact of breakdancing on body image and perception, focusing on breakdancers in Russia. The aim of the study is to explore the unique aspects of body perception, self-expression and socio-cultural influences on dancers in this context. The research methodology includes in-depth qualitative interviews with 16 breakdancers aged between 18 and 35, thematic analysis of the findings and identification of major themes and patterns to answer the following questions: How is the bodily ideal and logic of perception formed in the context of breakdancing as a bodily practice? How is the body image of breakdancers related to breakdancing as a specific bodily practice? The main findings of the analysis show that breakdancers in Russia use dance as a means of self-expression, communication, and self-esteem building. They highlight unique aspects of breakdancing such as freedom of expression, lack of rigid standards and the value of individuality. It is also revealed that the practice of breakdancing has physical, emotional and psychological effects on participants, promoting self-confidence and self-development. The paper identifies several key aspects that contribute to the perception of the ideal body in breakdancing: Proportionality and harmony, health and strength, individuality and self-expression, multifaceted physical development, and cultural influences and artistic expression. The relationship between body image and body perception can be understood through the following key characteristics: Emphasis on physical fitness, diversity, self-expression and creativity, physical challenge and resilience, and community support. The importance of understanding dance not only as a physical activity but also as an art form that can influence self-awareness and personal expression is emphasized. The results of the study may be useful for understanding the role of dance in identity formation and for developing practices and methods of self-expression through dance in different cultural contexts.
