In the 21st century, cinema is still a popular commercial art form with a wide audience. During the formation of Chinese avant-garde cinema, it was strongly influenced by Western films but Chinese directors adapted it so their works are filled with their own thoughts, experiences and ideas. Modern avant-garde filmmakers have contributed to the reinterpretation of the traditional academic style. Viewers watch exaggerated, abstract, paradoxical and experimental works on the screen with a completely new view of the world. The aim is to establish the theoretical foundations of avant-garde aesthetics in Chinese cinema of the XX–XXI centuries. The study presents the features of the development of avant-garde cinema in the world and in China and outlines the specifics of avant-garde aesthetics on the example of a Chinese short film.
