The thesis is dedicated to the study of the movie theater and film distribution industry in Japan, covering its historical development, changes in audience preferences, and the role of cinema in society. The topic is relevant due to the rich experience of the Japanese film industry, which, despite a limited market, today shows financial success and competes with American films in the domestic market. After the golden age of the 1950s, the industry contracted in the 1960s-1990s due to the emergence of alternative forms of media entertainment. However, after overcoming several challenges, the Japanese film industry developed unique approaches that are useful for other film markets, including the Russian one. The aim of the study is to investigate the evolution of the Japanese film industry considering its historical development, audience preferences, and cultural context. The following objectives were set: to trace the development of movie theaters and film distribution in Japan; to identify the cultural influence on film production and consumption; to analyze changes in audience preferences; to explore the role of movie theaters in the socio-cultural life of Japan; to assess the impact of Japanese cinema on the global stage; and to analyze current trends and challenges in the industry. The study highlights the significance of the Japanese experience for the development of cinema in other countries, offering valuable insights for adapting to changing market conditions.
