Plays of Jean-Baptiste Moliere have been the subject of numerous studies and interpretations in art. Names of his characters have long become household. The figure of Moliere itself now is considered to be closer to a myth or a symbol of theater, rather than a real person. “Molieriana” has become a kind of a mirror for the theater. With its help, theatrical art has told about itself and characterized a certain period in the history of theater. This study provides an analysis of the transformation of Moliere’s myth in the history of Russian drama and theater. Therefore, this work is based on interpretations of Bulgakov's play “The Cabal of Hypocrites” in the theater of the XX and XXI centuries, revealing the methods of representing Moliere as a character, not just a playwright and theater director. The anticipated results of this thesis can reveal certain methods of working with a myth, a literary figure and texts that integrate with a biography, and, finally, it can give insights into the national characteristics of the Russian theater and «Russian Moliere».
