The Development of Japanese Graphic Art 1950–1980: Typology, Genres and Style Trends

This thesis is devoted to the study of the stages of formation of Japanese graphic art and the features of its artistic language in 1950-1980s. The aim of this work is to study the peculiarities of the development of Japanese graphic art in 1950-1980 on the example of prints, graphic design and manga. The paper uses the diachronic method to describe the historical context of the development of Japanese culture and graphics. The socio-historical method was used to analyse the social and economic situation in Japan. The author studied the works of thirty-two artists of prints, graphic design and manga. Several cultural studies methods were used to carry out the analysis. The formal-stylistic method was used to investigate individual manner, material, etc. The iconographic method made it possible to describe the prints, manga, and posters of the 1950s-1980s and to identify their main themes, plots, ways and means of expression. Using the semiotic method, the differences in the system of signs of graphic works of different directions and genres were revealed. As a result of the study, the main historical events and phenomena that influenced the formation of Japanese graphics were identified. Also, its main features, typology, directions and genres in the second half of the twentieth century were highlighted.
