Content of K-pop Fans' Social Identity: a Multidimentional Model Implementation

This paper aims to specify the content of K-pop fan's social identity and reveal the elements that form it. The study addresses a research problem of determining which elements of the K-pop community fans' social identity allow people from different groups successfully assume this identity. By using a multidimensional model to gather deep and precise data, the study aims to provide more specific knowledge about the social identity of K-pop fans. Literature review consists of few sections collected information from previous works on relevant topics. In first chapter, I reflected on the definition of phenomenon “Fan” and “Fandom”, briefly revised history of some fandoms famous all around the world. I discussed main and modern studies in a field of fan studies (specifically k-pop studies). In chapter two, I summarized main ideas on vital social identity theories. I also highlighted identity investigation complexity, and pointed out main elements that have to be included for further measurement of identity in this research, according to Ashmore’s framework. I adopted a qualitative approach for this research and used semi-structured interview as the main tool for the research. As a results of this work, I collected evidences that confirms elements of Ashmore’s framework as applicable parts of K-pop community fans’ identity content. I also discussed reasons why people from different background may easily became a part of K-pop community.
