Our thesis work analyzes the representation of an individual facing death in Victor Hugo's novella "The Last Day of a Condemned Man" and Albert Camus's "The Stranger". At first, the study attempts to reconstruct the historical and literary context and the authors' attitude to the death penalty in journalism, diaries, and other literary texts. Then, at the intertextual and ideological levels, the interrelation of two key works by V. Hugo and A. Camus is considered, in order to prove the thematic and stylistic continuity of V. Hugo's prose in the works of A. Camus.
