A.P. Chekhov's Translations Into the Abkhaz Language: Textual Criticism, Pragmatics, Literary Reputation of the Translator

This thesis is devoted to the translations of A.P. Chekhov into Abkhazian and the translator's literary strategy. The relevance of the work lies in the fact that earlier studies on Chekhov in Abkhazia only concerned his visit to the republic and were mostly of a "local history" nature. Scientific works on Chekhov's translation into Abkhazian, and in general on translations of Russian literature, translation strategies and literary reputation of translators have not been written yet. The paper consistently reconstructs the historical and literary context against which Chekhov's translations are analyzed: the history of Chekhov's stay in Abkhazia (and his influence on Abkhaz culture), the social situation in the Soviet Union, and the development of writing and translation in Abkhazia. Chekhov's translations are examined on the material of two collections (the only ones for the whole period of the USSR) from 1937 and 1980. The paper describes their composition, comparing them with the texts of textbooks for Abkhazian and Russian-speaking schools to determine the reasons for the inclusion of stories in the collections. The main attention of the VKR is focused on the translation strategy manifested in the collections. An analysis of the different levels of the texts and a comparison of the quality of the translations with each other gives grounds to believe that the significant improvement in the level of the texts is due both to the increased individual skill of the author and the widely consolidated school of translation in the USSR.
