Chris Marker is considered one of the outstanding artists whose creative path spanned the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries. A writer, traveler, composer, philosopher, director and photographer, he created the genre of essay films and became one of the first transmedia artists, using the technological advances that emerged during his lifetime, such as television, digital cameras, the Internet and virtual reality. However, studies of Chris Marker's work often consider cinematic and virtual heritage. There is a tendency to overlook printed publications such as photo books. This work is dedicated to Chris Marker’s photo essay 'Le Dépays', which became one of the many creative embodiments of his trip to Tokyo in the early 1980s. The work presents an analysis of the photo essay: the artistic features of the text and images are described, the role of documentary photographs and the sign system are considered . The study attempts to expand existing knowledge of Marker's printed publications through an examination of the author's method.
