This paper is devoted to justifying and defending the heuristic potential of the family resemblance method for conceptualizing genocide as an alternative to traditional approach to definitions. The author deduces a number of necessary preconditions for applying the family resemblance method, establishes an algorithm for applying this method, and applies it to the concept of genocide. It is argued that definitions obtained using the family resemblance method do not lead to undesirable socio-political consequences and are descriptively adequate.
