"Neither the high breed, nor the wounds received before the enemy, give the right to be awarded this order: but it is given to those who not only corrected their position in everything according to their oath, honor and duty, but moreover distinguished themselves by a special kind of courageous act" - so it says in the established in 1769 the year of the Statute of the Military Order of the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George. For the first time in the history of Russia, a full-fledged award has appeared, officially awarded exclusively for bravery. The time of the appearance of this award is not accidental - the progress of military science led to a gradual change in tactical realities on the battlefield - "linear tactics" was rapidly changing, acquiring the features of what would later be called "Napoleonic tactics". Along with the restructuring of the tactical system, the perception of combat has also changed, as has the role of officers in battle. Now they were not just required to maintain order -they were expected to be brave. To do this, there are new rewards, new incentives, new rewards for bravery. This is a work about how courage was cultivated in the Russian army in the second half of the XVIII and the beginning of the XIX century as the main quality of an officer.
