Student: Lysova Evgeniia

Faculty: School of Foreign Languages

Educational Programme: Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2024

At the present time, educational programs are predominantly aimed at young individuals aged 14-35, while the "Moscow Longevity" program is designed specifically for the senior age group of 55 years and older. However, there is a noticeable gap in educational courses and programs designed specifically for middle-aged people of 35-55 years old, commonly referred to as the “Sandwich Generation.” This research aims to develop educational materials tailored to meet the unique needs of this demographic, addressing the intersection of adult education principles (andragogy), motivation, memory, and language learning techniques. Recognizing the challenges that foreign language learning presents at an older age, this study investigates the use of the lexical approach as a tool to enhance language acquisition and memory for adult learners, providing useful techniques and strategies. To gain a thorough understanding of the language learning needs, challenges, and preferences of the Sandwich Generation, the research involves collecting data through a survey. Furthermore, the study includes an analysis of existing textbooks to assess content, exercise types, and topics that align with adult learning principles such as self-directedness, task orientation, and relevance to real-life situations. By identifying the specific language learning requirements of the “Sandwich Generation” and designing a module adapted to middle-aged people, educational institutions can develop tailored programs and teaching methodologies. Keywords: Sandwich Generation, memory enhancement, lexical approach, foreign language learning, learning language in chunks
