Narcissistic Takeover of the Child by the Mother

In this final qualifying work, a study was conducted of the life of the hero of Emile Zola’s book “The Belly of Paris” from a psychoanalytic point of view. Theories within the framework of the psychoanalytic understanding of “maternal narcissistic capture” are considered using the example of the life of the main character Florent. His life takes place in France in the 19th century, a turbulent pre-revolutionary time. By examining the history of Florent’s birth, life, environment, object relationships with people significant to him, personal life and work, as well as the symptoms of his mental pathology, conclusions were drawn about his mental structure and main pathologies. The work outlines the basic psychoanalytic theories and concepts that helped carry out the analysis and achieve an understanding of the mental structure of the hero and his main conflicts that unfolded in his internal reality and were reflected in his interaction with the outside world. A brief review of the various primary relationships in the theories of various psychoanalysts and a review of functioning depending on the established primary contact with the maternal object are made. A separate chapter is devoted to narcissism, the concept of “Dead Mother”. Attention is paid to the borderline personality structure, the main elements of which were identified in the main character.
