Unveiling the Layers in Translating Neil Gaiman’s and Terry Pratchett’s Intermedial Elements into Russian – a Linguocultural Exploration

Cultural elements in a literary work are represented predominantly through culturally specific vocabulary. This paper examines the difficulties encountered in translating culturally specific items (CSIs) from English into Russian based on the translations of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens by M. Yurkan and V. Filippov. The aim of the qualitative-descriptive study is to compare the translation methods used and to categorise the CMIs found into groups based on their subject matter in order to better understand the role they play in influencing the reader's perception. The work is based on the classification of translation methods proposed by E. Davis. The paper also examines the strategies of translation of CMIs identified by L. Venuti as «domestication» and «foreignization». Descriptive, comparative and quantitative analyses were used to accomplish the assigned tasks, and tables with the collected data were compiled.
