Description of the Character’s Appearance as a Device of the Coherence Creation in the Fictional Text (Based on English-Language Literature)

The work is devoted to describing the appearance of a character as a means of creating coherence of a literary text as implemented in English-language fiction. By using the methods of hermeneutic analysis in conjunction with the analysis of coherence as a stylistic concept, the work analyzes a pre-compiled corpus of micro-contextual excerpts from the works of English-language authors of fiction. The authors are related to the movements of romanticism, realism, modernism and postmodernism. The obtained results indicate that the description of appearance is fundamental for the production of coherence. This study closes the gap in the study of specific types of compositional speech forms and demonstrates the possibility of convergence of methods of hermeneutic analysis and coherence analysis.
