In the field of education, particularly within academic writing, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative influence, displaying the capability to generate complex and coherent texts that resemble content created by humans. As the utilization of AI in generating academic content becomes more prevalent, it is crucial to closely examine the linguistic characteristics of such texts. The aim of this work is to identify unique AI patterns in essays in English, exploring distinctive linguistic features, and to conduct a comprehensive comparison with human-written essays, revealing similarities and differences. This research employs content, linguistic, and comparative analysis. The sample for analysis includes 20 A-grade essays written by HSE students and a corresponding set of essays generated by ChatGPT, an advanced AI language model. It is expected that essays crafted by ChatGPT will exhibit a higher degree of grammatical accuracy, devoid of typical student errors. This research contributes to the understanding of the linguistic qualities of AI-generated academic texts and provides valuable insights for educators, researchers, and developers in the realm of AI-assisted content creation. It lays the groundwork for future advancements in refining AI language models to produce more contextually diverse and nuanced academic writings. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence (AI), ChatGPT, Academic discourse, Essay
