The paper analyzes understanding and application of the concept «national in form, socialist in content» architecture in the construction practice of the Kyrgyz SSR during the period from 1950s to 1980s. The study is relevant, since this period in the republic has not been studied much and some monuments of this era are already being demolished, while subsequently national features formulated in the era of Soviet modernism became the basis for the formation of national identity in the architecture of the Kyrgyz Republic. To solve this problem, the author analyzes the process of creating a national architectural school in the 1930s and 1950s, the evolution of the concept of «national in form» architecture and its application in construction practice. To answer the research question of how the concept changed during the selected period, the literature and materials in which the ideologists of the concept formulated it are analyzed, including reports and transcripts of congresses of the Union of Architects, articles written by architects of the Kyrgyz SSR. Cultural-historical and historiographical analyses are used for this purpose. When working with architectural monuments and analyzing buildings, a formal stylistic method and architectural comparative analysis are used.
