Educational Programme: History of Arts (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2024

The current study focuses on the methodological aspects of the history of 20th-century architecture as presented in the works of R.Wittkower. During his analysis of the Renaissance, the researcher proposed a novel interpretation and formulated universal principles for architectural practice. Within the existing frameworks, however, the individuality of the researcher has been primarily seen in terms of their application of the approaches of A. Warburg and E. Panofsky. The purpose of this paper is to examine the development of Wittkower's own methodology and its applications, as well as its influence on the field of art history. Wittkower rationalized the methods of Alberti and Palladio, and proposed construction schemes based on proportional relationships. Additionally, the publication of his program monograph during a period of architectural crisis in post-war Britain had an impact on how his ideas were perceived by architectural students in the 1950s.
