This work is devoted to one of the elements of formative assessment - mutual evaluation. The analysis of foreign and domestic studies shows that the method of mutual assessment is an effective practice that contributes to improving the quality of educational results. The purpose of the work is to determine the effectiveness of the mutual assessment method for the development of writing skills of secondary school students. To achieve this goal, the tasks were formulated, which consist in studying the experience of using the method of mutual assessment at different levels of education, considering various forms of mutual assessment and its integral components such as criterion assessment and feedback. In order to answer the research question posed by us, "how to develop writing skills in secondary school students using the mutual assessment method?" a qualitative study was conducted. Having collected and analyzed the data obtained, we formulated the basic principles of effective application of the mutual assessment method for the development of writing skills in secondary school students.
