M.C. Beaton's "Death of a Cad" (1987) is a fascinating detective novel about the investigation of the mysterious murder of Captain Peter Bartlett. It is the second book in the series about Constable Hamish Macbeth. The Halberton-Smythe family is hosting a party to celebrate the engagement of their daughter, Priscilla, and guests are staying for several nights at the family's Tommel Castle. However, one of the guests, Captain Peter Bartlett is found dead one morning. Hamish Macbeth is the only one who is sure that it was murder and not an accident, and despite his beloved's engagement and his own broken heart, the constable takes on the case. This paper contains a translation of two chapters of the novel and an analytical commentary on it.
