The work examines the elements typical for utopian novels in M. Petrosyan's novel “The Gray House". A significant place is occupied by a detailed analysis of the artistic world of the work, which creates the possibility of functioning within its framework of a conditionally “ideal” society. The paper provides an overview of the history of literary utopia, the milestones of its existence and key texts that greatly influenced the genre. Based on the materials of Petrosyan`s novel, evidence is provided for the presence in the text of signs of different types of utopias, namely eutopia and dystopia. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of the system of characters and narrators in the novel, which allows combining the polar views of utopia within one novel. Additionally, the problem of adolescent escapism as a consequence of fear of the larger world is briefly analyzed.
