In this research, two popular approaches to developing critical thinking in mathematics were considered. The first is focused on designing inquiry-based lessons and studying their effect on students' thinking. The implications of inquiry-based lessons on students' thinking, as well as the difficulties of implementation of those lessons on a regular basis, are discussed in this paper. The second approach emphasizes the development of critical thinking through solving the problems which require building counterexamples to the statements. Such problems were included systematically to the class worksheets and their effect on critical thinking was observed. The research used interpretivism paradigm to process the data. The conclusions were drawn on the basis of class observations and interviews with teachers and students at the researcher's place of work.
