Paettir in "Morkinskinna"; the Structural and Narrative Role

This work aims to analyze semi-independent short stories incorporated into the narrative of the sagas called þættir choosing the first compendium of konungasögur Morkinskinna (early XIII c.) as primary material. The Introduction challenges different approaches to defining and interpreting þættir suggested by previous researchers and proposes a broader look upon þættir and þættir-related narratives. The first chapter attempts a formalized description of their structure, narrative types and their potential link to the broader narrative of sagas they are incorporated to, thus defining several features of Morkinskinna as a whole. The second part attempts to analyze þættir as an anthropological phenomenon related to cultural memory.
