Labor Integration: Accounting for the 'Changing Situation'

Event ended

Social workers often talk about 'the person in the situation' - for example, focusing on the social and everyday life contexts of a person engaged in a labor integration program. The person in the changing situation is a theme that we may use to explore the labor integration processes of immigrants.

The presentation will demonstrate how such processes are relational in the sense of change over time and space – both personal and in terms of changing encounters with various regulatory frameworks and authorities - over the entire life course. The point will be illustrated by focusing on a hypothetical immigrant, Sara, and describing the questions we might ask to situate Sara’s labor integration process in terms of change over time and space. The presentation will end with a suggested strategy for analysis of subjective immigrant labor integration experiences with a focus on the changing situation over time.
