In the course of the Public Sphere of Society students should understand theoretical concepts and learn to analyze social processes. But it is not enough for a public sociologist to be just a good expert: such experts build communication with different audiences through publications in the media. Invited speaker Darya Ternovskaya, OTP editor and head of the HSE Internet School of Journalism and Media Communication helped to understand how to do this effectively.

At the seminar, undergraduates and trainees of ML ISI learned how different genres differ in journalism, how to come up with a title for the material and what is needed to create an interesting storytelling. They also discussed with the speaker the exciting questions: how to make a podcast out of the scientific work? Does the media support cultural diversity? What is the difference between interviews in journalism and sociology?

"What do you have to do to learn to write quality texts?" summarized the discussion with another question from the floor. The answer was clear: practice and feedback from the editor were needed. Students will have an opportunity to improve their creative writing skills during the final task of the course. Undergraduates prepare an author’s column on the basis of course work and discuss the results with the staff of the International Laboratory of Social Integration Studies.
