At the conference, master student Elizaveta Zyryanova and Head of the ILSIR at the HSE University, Professor Elena Iarskaia-Smirnova presented a paper «Transformation of the image of domestic violence against women in the media: based on content analysis of popular Russian media in 2020-2021».

The paper examined the discourses of domestic violence used in popular newspapers in Russia during the pandemic crisis of 2020-2021. The analysis was carried out using the methods of Text mining, quantitative content analysis and discourse analysis of texts of popular newspapers.

The results of the study showed that the popular media raised the acute topic of the growth of domestic violence during the pandemic, however, a number of articles create contradictory discourses, reproduce stereotypes accusing victims of violence. At the same time, the number of articles mentioning the structural causes of the problem has increased somewhat, including the inaction of law enforcement and judicial systems.
