Updating the university’s corporate identity is a joint project of the HSE Public Relations Office and the HSE Art and Design School. Our aim was not full-scale rebranding (which would not benefit the university), but rather updating the existing logo and developing a contemporary corporate identity that draws on the best ideas in the field of visual communications.

Primary logo

Note: The official name is HSE University (National Research University Higher School of Economics). Use 'HSE University' in publications and promotional materials.

Do NOT use NRU HSE or both names together: National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University).

Font

Description HSE Sans HSE Slab

HSE University is a large-scale organization. As such, in addition to the logo, it needs stylistically distinctive elements and an identity that can be used by all departments and employees in various situations without exception. The HSE corporate font is an essential element of the new brand book.

To install a font, download the archive with the required font, unzip it on your computer, double-click the .otf file to open the font installation programme and follow the instructions.

Patterns

Since it is difficult to find high-quality illustrated or photo materials for many university departments, you can brighten them up using our patterns.

Simple patterns include 1–3 basic blocks that can be combined with each other in different orders and scales.

Maximum flexibility and adaptability are necessary for communications with HSE University’s numerous target audiences. This is achieved by creating a typographic framework—a unified grid and set of principles for text layout. In turn, this framework can contain image graphics to help tailor the tone of your message.

Souvenir products

In the future, the HSE printing house (which is being redesigned by the HSE Art and Design School) will have ready-made layouts for souvenirs and all possible types of media. This will make it possible to place an order simply by specifying the desired medium, print and text.

When purchasing products for printing, we recommend that you adhere to branded colours. The products can be white, blue (close to the brand shade of dark blue) or black. When ordering metal products, we recommend silver metal. White products do not necessarily have to be bright white—on the contrary, it is preferable to choose natural white shades for paper products and unpainted textiles for fabrics (for example, canvas for tote bags).

We recommend making white or silver prints on black and dark blue media. For large background prints, you can print in lighter shades of blue with the branded dark blue colour. Printing on white media should be done in branded dark blue or shades from an additional palette.

We recommend using silver or blue foil for foiling.

HSE’s visual language conveys the energy and tone of the university's communications, so it is important to follow photo style recommendations.

When selecting photos, you should keep to a serious message and demonstrate professionalism—but don’t be too formal. In portrait photography, this message can be conveyed by serious, but open and friendly faces. Wide shots require a central angle, symmetry and neutral lighting.

We recommend that you keep post-processing to a minimum for all images and avoid additional special effects (filters, textures, etc.).
