About the Programme
The Master’s degree programme ‘History of Art Culture and the Arts Market’ was introduced in 2012 as interdisciplinary MA programme for students who are looking for professional training in the history of art and expert knowledge of the art market. The program’s teaching staff includes academic scholars and recognized art professionals, who provide a wide-ranging knowledge of historical expertise and business acumen. Courses are covering subjects from art law and valuation of art to the history of European and Asian art, and architecture.
The uniqueness and relevance of the course lie in its aim to train expert professionals who play a vital role in the functioning of the art market. It is the expert who suggests what art objects are exhibited today in both state-owned and private galleries define the narration in museums, how art is valued. The historical and research expertise of an art historian and critic, her knowledge of market trends are central to the decision making of professionals in art market sector and art institutions.
The interdisciplinary programmes cover three major areas:
- Art and Architecture History and Connoisseurship
- Theory and History of Art Studies
- Art Valuation, Management, and Art Law
These areas are covered through the 8 modules by recognized art professionals with considerable experience and extensive contacts in Russia and abroad, as well as by museum researchers and top class restorers. Lectures and seminars also include guest speakers from museums, research institutes, heritage preservation organizations, artist's studios and art galleries.
Applicants must submit a Portfolio which includes Education Certificate, Motivation Letter and a written essay on the topic related to art, art history, art critic or art management or art market. For details see ‘About Portfolio’.
