Young Researchers Took Part in the First Critical Media Studies Winter School

More than 30 students and recent graduates participated in the first CMS Winter School.

The programme professors Panos Kompatsiaris, Ilya Kiriya, Olga Baisha, Yiannis Mylonas held masterclasses about political economy of communication, critical discourse analysis, and new media consumption.

The popularity of this Winter School is explained by Academic Supervisor and HSE Assistant Professor Panos Kompatsiaris as “critical thinking is indispensable for personal and social development in a world of increasing complexity that requires advanced analytical skills in order to understand and make sense of reality. Media and communication are in many ways the drivers of this process so their critical study becomes even more relevant”.

The participant of the first School Elena Kaganova shares: “Participation in the Winter School helped to determine the direction of my master’s educational track. [The School was] a very useful event to listen to a few lectures and understand what awaits you in the programme. At the same time, I was able to assess my knowledge and English language proficiency. I became more confident about enrolling!
I especially remembered how Yiannis Mylonas talked about the study of the Greek crisis and its reflection in the media. I was struck by the scale of practical research, and, of course, it was very useful to see its methodology.”

In 2020, there is the first intake of the Critical Media Studies master's programme. Students will study how the media are organized, how they produce content, and how this content defines our views and life. “The students will gain the qualifications required for making research and pursuing a Ph.D. career in leading universities around the world. In addition, the in-depth research skills they will acquire aims to prepare them for careers in media, cultural and creative institutions related to supervising, policy design and critical analysis,” – says Panos Kompatsiaris.

For those, who missed an opportunity to come to the first Winter School, there is a chance to attend the CMS March School.
