About the Programme
Sociological education from the HSE provides an excellent basis for a successful academic career and gives serious competitive advantages in the labour market. The master’s programme in Complex Social Analysis has been developed in line with advanced international standards of master’s education and takes into consideration the best traditions of a Russian university education.
The master’s programme in Complex Social Analysis is a balanced combination of three blocks of disciplines aimed at:
- Development of cognitive competencies in social theory,
- Fundamental training in methods of sociological studies,
- Development of professional analytical skills and practical competencies through mastering a broad spectrum of optional applied disciplines.
The knowledge and skills received on this programme will allow graduates to become highly qualified practicing sociologists able to independently develop, plan and conduct sociological and marketing studies, based on their knowledge of the theory and methods of sociology.
Graduates of this course will be able to:
- Continue their academic career in a Russian postgraduate school or international PhD programme;
- Work as leading analysts and highly qualified specialists in state agencies, marketing and survey firms, media business as well as in corporate research centers and consulting companies. It is important to emphasize that the programme graduates will be able to participate in the preparation and implementation of complex projects where the feasibility requirements are combined with the necessity of using academic conceptualizations of the problems, scientific methods of research and preparation of final analytical materials as reports and publications in specialized journals. Taking into consideration the knowledge and skills received, course graduates, after getting a relevant experience, are able to lead professional teams. Programme graduates’ have gone on to be employed by GfK Russia, Public Opinion Foundation, OMI (Online Market Intelligence), HSE research departments etc.
- Work as leading officers and experts in governmental bodies (ministries and other state institutions).
Lecturers
The academic supervisor of the master’s programme is Professor Inna Devyatko, Doctor of Science (Sociology).
The courses within the programme are read by leading professors and lecturers of the HSE, RAS Institute of Sociology and the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences, as well as members of renowned survey and marketing centers.

Bachelors and specialists can apply for the master’s programme.
This is a two year course and run on both a state-financed and fee-paying basis.
