HSE Day For Everyone
On September 13, the annual HSE Day will take place in Gorky Park. This is an exciting event, open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Every year, the choice of activities becomes longer and longer. Find out here what’s on offer – there’s something for everyone.
HSE Day has been held at Gorky Park every September since 2012. The park is transformed into a huge university campus, where anyone can come and experience HSE. Talk with current students about the entry process and the various programmes on offer, as well as to professors and teachers whose lectures you might have seen online on YouTube, Postnauka or Coursera. Alternatively, enjoy one of the many activity areas and have some fun. HSE Day also always has a general sponsor. For several years already, this sponsor has been Sberbank.
If you are a student at HSE, then this is definitely an event for you! Here’s an overview: first-year students can enjoy the ‘Freshman’s Quest’ and obtain some useful insights for starting uni. There are also great prizes to be won. Meet international students, ask them about their studies in other parts of the world, and practice their native language at ‘The Whole World at HSE’. There will also be a presentation on ‘HSEcoin’ - a new crowd-funding mechanism for HSE student projects. University heads will address the entire student community at the evening concert at the Zeleniy (Green) Theater. First-years will all get tickets to the concert!
If you are a high school student and have not yet decided where to go to study, HSE Day is a great opportunity to make up your mind. Be sure to come to ‘HSE Open Doors’, where teachers and students will talk about all the faculties and programmes offered at the Higher School of Economics. HSE StudLife will give you all the information you need on the extra-curricular university life and the many different student organizations. HSE StudLife will set up a lecture hall and an activities area and will run various workshops at the HSE StudLife Lounge.
If you are interested in science, you should see the ‘HSE Open Talks’. Here, HSE teachers will give lectures on a variety of topics, not only in Russian, but also in English. Lectures will begin at 14.00 and continue into the evening. The ‘Science Battles’ (held in Russian) see students go head-to-head to present innovations in the most exciting way possible. You will even have the opportunity to vote for your favourite presentation. Alternatively, you might be more interested in seeing the innovations they talk about with your own eyes - you can do this at the Science & Technology tent. Here, you can test neuro-computer interfaces, various apps and even robots developed by HSE students.
If you are into fashion, you simply have to visit the School of Design area and watch the fashion show ‘HARD 005: SUB SUB CULTURE’, staged by HSE Fashion students who are regular participants in Russia’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
If you like music, come and see the live performance by HSE musicians at the gazebo or on the dance floor (where you can not only listen, but also dance), and where ‘1/2 Orchestra’ will also perform. The most exciting musical event of the day and the culmination of the entire event will be the traditional concert for lyceum students, current students, graduates and employees of HSE at the Green Theater. This year, concert-goers will enjoy The Hatters and other local musicians.
If you are a romantic, check out ‘Rediscovering Russia’, where students will talk about their trips around the country. You can also listen to poems written by students at the HSE open air poetry slam. These activities will be in Russian.
If you are thinking about your career, come to The ‘HSE. Career. Start’ area. It will be on offer for the first time this year. In this interactive zone everyone will have the opportunity to experience their professional future and hear the secrets of success from representatives of the largest companies - Sberbank, Unilever, Mail.ru, KPMG, Coca-Cola and many others. You just might find the job of your dreams.
If you are 5 years old or younger, and your parents work at HSE, persuade them to pick you up early from kindergarten and come to ‘HSE Family’. Older children will also find something to their liking. You can mould an HSE crow from clay, participate in carpentry, pottery or culinary workshops, and even ‘drive’ a professional racing car simulator using virtual reality glasses.
If you are an athlete, then a major sporting event should be on your list - the ‘5 km to the Deadline’ race, which involves running 5 kilometers along the Pushkin and Andreevskaya embankments, from the Zeleniy Theater to Luzhnetsk bridge. At the ‘Sports at HSE’ area, there will be performances by HSE sportsmen and women, competitions in table tennis, volleyball, football and basketball, and master classes in yoga, wushu, cheerleading and various dance styles. There is also an Extreme Zone, where you can use a skateboard, longboard or even rollerblades.
All other venues offering workshops, lectures and games, as well as a detailed schedule of events, can be found on the official HSE Day website.
