Abstract

The cours “Current Problems of the Financial Analysis” is the methodological base for the courses of HSE Master’s programme “Financial Analyst”. The emphasis is done for analytical and research student activities.Basic terms, research topics and methods are to be learnt during the seminars. “Current Problems of the Financial Analysis” partially touches the regular courses’ content, and thus helps to improve the material comprehension and stimulates the self-study.The learning objective of “Current Problems of the Financial Analysis” – to develop students’ skills of independent research work, including the mastering of current methods and research techniques usage, scientific discussion on the given topic, one’s own research results presentation; to help in work on the master’s thesis; to develop communication and presentation skills.

  • The main objective of the course is to provide the conceptual background for conducting an independent research, mastering data analysis, scientific discussion, presentation, and communication skills. The emphasis is put on analytical and research student activities. During the first year of studies students will be asked to complete their own individual research (course paper) and a comprehensive company valuation group project.

  • Identify gaps in research through reviews of existing research
  • Develop new research questions and hypotheses
  • Evaluate the validity and reliability of different research methodologies
  • Develop and implement a research design using the most appropriate methodologies and analysis strategies for the given question. 
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Evaluate the quality of empirical data
  • Apply appropriate methods of data analysis and interpretation
  • Be aware of the current research areas in finance, be able to make the overview of the latest empirical works in the chosen field and participate in scientific discussions
  • Perform a deep fundamental company research, apply valuation methods, and provide recommendations
  • Present the results of the business research according to industry standards (apply the necessary format, structure, visualization tools, etc.)
  • Communicate the results of the research project in a manner appropriate to the target audience, research methodologies used, and research purpose
