Final State Examination (FSE) of the master's program “International Trade Law and Dispute Resolution” has been completed
On May 27 and June 3, respectively, in two stages, the state final examination (GIA) passed for students of the 2nd year of the Master's program “Law of International Trade and Dispute Resolution”.
This year, for the first time since the existence of the program, students took the state exam in a new format: at the beginning of the 1st year, they were given the opportunity to choose a study track (international trade law or dispute resolution) for a more detailed study of the chosen area of international law, in addition to the general disciplines of the program, such as theory of international economic law or the law of international treaties. Thus, in the examination held in a mixed format on May 27, 2023, the students had to answer 2 tickets consisting of a question on the general part of the educational program and a question on the track of their choice.
The Examination Commission, represented by its chairperson, noted the students profound knowledge of international law, high level of English language proficiency and involvement in the discussion of controversial legal issues.

- P.A. Lomakina, Associate Professor, Head of the Expert and Contractual Direction of the Legal Work Center;
- V.V. Talanov, Head of International Trade and Customs Law Practice at the Moscow Office of Egorov, Puginsky & Partners Law Offices, and an attorney with the St. Petersburg Bar Association;
- O.S. Starshinova, Deputy Head of the Merchandise Trade Division of the Trade Negotiations Department of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation.
As part of the public defense of Master’s theses, which was held on June 3, 2023, students were also able to demonstrate their research skills, obtained by writing independent research.
Topics of Master’s theses selected by the students and presented for defense included a variety of issues on topical issues in international law: the impact of sanctions on international arbitration, access to justice and dispute resolution, the relationship between international economic and international environmental law, the exhaustion of trademark rights in international trade, corporate violations of human rights, extraterritorial jurisdiction of states in ICTs, reforming the investor state dispute settlement system and etc.
At the end of the defense all members of the Commission noted the novelty and independence of the research, and the work of several students were especially noted and offered for publication in the HSE University Journal of International Law.
