Oxfam Workshop on Violence against Women
On October 3rd and 4th Zorica Skakun, a gender coordinator for Oxfam GB in Yemen who provides support and leadership to ensure women's rights, presented two workshops on various aspects of violence against women for students of the programme "Population and Development".
Our students had a chance to learn about key concepts that define VAW and recognise its main types, underlying causes and consequences during and after conflicts & natural disasters. Also practioners from Syria, Palestine and the UK shared their insights into the situation of women’s rights in the field and ways of preventing and combating VAW.
Our guest speaker Ms. Zorica Skakun from Oxfam gave an overview of international frameworks & mandates and programmes aimed to end VAW and help survivors in various settings, including conflict zones and refugee camps. Then students were offered complete a group exercise. They brainstormed and presented ideas for pre-project problem analysis and activities to combat VAW in Syria.
