Master Class from the Programme Graduate at the Winter School 2023

A few days later, on February 16, as part of a series of master classes at the Winter School, Yassir Mohammed, a graduate of our program, and now a grad student of the A.G. Vishnevsky Institute of Demography, delivered his report on the topic of migration of Africans. For his research, Yassir collected data from a survey among 120 students of various levels of education from Africa, and also conducted a statistical analysis of this problem using databases of the United Nations and other major organizations. Based on the results of the research, Yassir also gave recommendations on the development of projects that facilitate the return of migrants to their home countries for NGOs, government agencies and international structures.

Another issue raised in the presentation was the problem of refugee status. According to Yassir, the main causes of migration from African countries are economic inequality and human rights violations. These processes lead to a massive increase in the number of refugees in countries such as France, Great Britain, Germany, and the USA, which account for the majority of migrants. Concluding the report, Yassir highlighted the advantages of Russia for people arriving from Africa, compared with the countries of Europe and America.

In the final part of the presentation, our graduate launched an active discussion with the participants of the Winter School, answered the applicants' questions, and conducted a mini master class on data visualization. At the end of his speech, Yasir shared his impressions and experience of studying at the Higher School of Economics and also gave parting words to everyone who wants to join the educational program “Population and Development” in the new academic year.
