HSE Keeps International Faculty on Their Toes in Friendly and Competitive Environment

Carol S. Leonard, Leading Research Fellow at the HSE Institute of Regional Studies and Urban Planning and Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Polytical Analisys and Public Policy, Population and Development, has been at the HSE since 2011. She talked to HSE News Service about the things she likes about her job, the cultured and energetic environment at HSE, and about the changes she sees across Russia since her undergraduate days when she first became interested in the country, its language and people.

On January 31st – February 3rd 2016, the Winter School of the Faculty of Social Sciences was held at the ‘Voronovo’ Learning Centre, HSE. During the event, potential master’s students took part in master classes, business cases and meetings with students and graduates of the faculty’s educational programmes.

On January 29, Thomas Espy, a student in the Population and Development Master’s programme at HSE, presented a report entitled ‘Mapping Xenophobia in Russia’. During his presentation, he highlighted his paper’s linear analysis of xenophobic attacks in the Russian Federation and a network analysis focusing on nationalist groups, as well as recommended areas of focus for Russian policymakers.

Meanwhile, customer focus is emerging as a key trend in business management.  Ksenia Klepneva , postgraduate student of the HSE School of Business Administration, examined factors contributing to customer focus in companies operating in developed and developing economies.

Traditional Family is in Revival

The Russian family has been becoming more demographically heterogeneous over recent years. Some of the families follow the trend of having many children: women more often give birth to a third and fourth child, and the gap between births is decreasing, which makes the evolution of the family faster. At the same time, younger generations are inclined to postpone marriage and having their first child, which leads either to later motherhood or to childlessness. This means that two opposite trends are developing; along with the growing share of ‘Western-type’ families, with postponed parenthood and fewer children, there is a revival of the traditional family with more children,Sergey Zakharov, Deputy Director of the HSE Institute of Demography, reported.

Applications for increased state academic scholarship open until September 21st

The Increased State Academic Scholarship (ISAS) is intended for state-funded students for noteworthy academic, research, social, cultural, creative, or athletic achievements. Applications for the Increased State Academic Scholarship are accepted from September 5, 2015 (10 am) to September 21, 2015 (10 am) via the LMS system.
