About the Programme
Over the last few decades a wide range of mathematical methods, previously not used, have become essential tools in modern physics. The Master’s Programme in Mathematical Physics provides training for professional researchers, who have a comprehensive understanding of fundamental models of modern theoretical physics and advanced mathematical knowledge.
The programme takes two full years of study. Some courses are offered in English in collaboration with the programme Math in Moscow. The Programme is focused on seminars and collective discussions as well as individual consultations with students’ academic supervisors. Every student has the Individual Study Plan (also called Individual Education Plan or Personal Curriculum) that may include courses offered by the Faculty of Mathematics as well as other faculties of HSE and other universities including the Independent University of Moscow and RAS research and educational centres. Every master’s student can choose his minor (a set of elective subjects) offered by another HSE faculty.
The teaching staff of the Programme include prominent experts and young promising fellows. They all combine teaching with active research. The Head of the Programme is Igor Krichever, Professor of Columbia University, a leading expert of the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics, and a member of the boards of European and Moscow mathematical societies.
The Faculty of Mathematics cooperates with leading RAS institutes in mathematics, physics and IT: Steklov Mathematical Institute, Lebedev Physical Institute and the Institute for Information Transition Problems (Kharkevich Intitute). The Faculty also has student exchange programmes with Ecole Polytechnique in Paris and the University of Kyoto and Leiden University.
Successful graduates of the Programme can continue their studies and research in top Russian and international centres for mathematical and theoretical physics such as the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (Moscow), the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), the Steklov Mathematical Institute (Moscow and Saint Petersburg), The Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (Bonn), and many others. Our graduates, who plan to get PhDs in mathematics, mathematical physics and economics are welcome in best universities, both Russian and international (Harvard University, Prinston University and MIT).
The programme first graduates work in insurance, analytics, IT and other high-tech fields. They develop their careers in the following companies: Zurich Insurance Group, Geometry Global, RadiumOne, KPMG, Sberbank, Central Bank, VimpelCom, SIBUR, Renaissance Insurance Group and many others.
The programme admits Russian and international graduates of universities with a degree not lower than bachelor's degree. The admission is based on a competitive selection. Prospective students are expected to pass a written test in mathematics and a foreign language exam.
Candidates applying for this programme are expected to demonstrate the ability to learn in RUSSIAN. If you prefer to take the same programme entirely in English, please instead apply for the twin programme "Mathematics" (www.hse.ru/en/ma/math) that offers an option to specialize in Mathematical physics (with the same educational opportunities as described above) or in Mathematics.
