On March 7 has been held a scientific seminar from the seria “Culture does matter”. The report “Private intergenerational transfers in terms of demographic aging in Russia” was made by Anna Mironova, trainee-researcher of ISEL-SCR.

The report was devoted to the analysis of intergenerational transfers on the micro level, also there were discussed their main types (top-down and bottom-up, material and instrumental), the relevance of their study both in Russia, and the context of demographic aging. Anna Mironova emphasized the main motives of the transfer transmissions and transfer direction.

Firstly, during the transfer transmission, people could be guided by altruism, maximizing its usefulness, and secondly, by the principle of exchange, hoping for the return assistance in the future, and the direction of transfer flows depends on the stage of the life cycle of person. The study of intergenerational transfers is important due to the fact that they play. In an empirical study of intergenerational transfers it is important to take into account such demographic factors, as fertility \ mortality, life expectancy, age, migration, being in a registered or common law marriage, and include not only the immediate family, but all those who are currently included in the family group and the friends with whom transfers exchange can be.

At the current moment, there is a large-scale project, organized in the HSE, one of whose tasks is to collect data on transfer flows in Russia. One of the main aim of Russian Longitudal Monitoring Survey is to provide data on household, material well-being of the population, the structure of income and expenses, and more.

Based on this project, Anna Mironova plans her empirical study of intergenerational transfers in Russia on the background of demographic aging and other socio-economic conditions.
