Outlining linguistic deficits in different types of aphasia: development and application of the Russian Aphasia Test
In collaboration with the Centre for Speech Pathology and Neurorehabilitation and Tatiana Vasilievna Akhutina, we are developing a battery of language tests in Russian - the Russian Aphasia Test (RAT). The fundamental scientific problem of the proposed research project is centered on delineating the linguistic profile of impairment in different types of aphasia. This problem is of immense importance for the contemporary study of language and its psychological organization and carries great clinical significance.
By developing the battery we aim to solve three problems. From the stand of fundamental science, there is a great need in further relating the linguistics deficits in aphasia, as they provide insights into the overall organization of language structures and processes. From a clinical perspective, a detailed assessment and determination of the linguistic mechanisms of language impairment helps to select the most appropriate therapy, provides prognosis and evaluation of treatment effectiveness. Furthermore, the detailed description of linguistic deficits associated with different types of aphasia is a critical step in overcoming the gap between Russian and Western approaches to aphasia, as it leads to the creation of an independent objective assessment instrument for outlining language deficits and facilitates communication between different schools.
The scientific novelty of the proposed research is in the scale of the planned linguistic investigation in terms of covering all the language domains and taking into account all relevant (psycho)linguistic variables. The novelty of the methodological task is two-fold. First of all, on the international level, there is a great need for the development of comprehensive, linguistically-oriented assessment tools for studying language in aphasia. Second, apart from scattered subtest tasks, no contemporary standardized language assessment tools are available in Russian, despite the vast need for such an instrument. We take into account different cognitive and linguistic variables, estimating their impact on language and its recovery, and investigate their impact at distinct linguistic levels in all language modalities . That way, the proposed Russian Aphasia Test, has the chance to become not only a comprehensive Russian aphasia battery but an ideal prototype of a complex and comprehensive aphasia language test worldwide, leading to a thorough model of language processing in different types of aphasia.
