Leonid Gokhberg, First Vice Rector of HSE and Director of the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge, has turned 55.
The focus of Leonid Gokhberg’s research interests can be best described as the meta-study of science. It includes studying the areas, tools and development factors of science, both in its current state and the long-term agenda for its future.
Many statistical measurements in science and innovations in Russia today are the result of 30 years of work carried out by Leonid Gokhberg and his team. A series of statistical digests published by HSE (Science Indicators, Innovation Activity Indicators etc) have become essential resources for decision-makers in S&T and innovation policy.
Science management is a subject of complex regulation, which requires appropriate S&T policy measures, since it has to do with the goals, interests and resources of various actors in the innovation system. For many years, Leonid Gokhberg and his team have been forecasting promising areas for S&T development. Their key foresight projects include the Forecast for Russia’s S&T development, as well as lists of essential technologies and priority areas to be developed in Russian science and technology.
Leonid Gokhberg has authored over 400 academic papers and co-authored several international reports, such as the Global Innovation Index (2016, 2014, and 2012) and the UNESCO Science Report. He represents Russia in OECD and Eurostat expert groups on STI indicators. As the editor-in-chief of the Foresight Journal, Leonid Gokhberg has turned this publication into a notable periodical for STI researchers, and one which is improving its position in international rankings every year.
Prof. Gokhberg has worked at HSE since 2002. He supervises all applied studies and foresight projects, as well as innovative and expert analytical work in state statistics and STI development. In this way, he promotes HSE’s position as one of the leading research universities not only nationally but also globally.
Leonid Gokhberg has a talent for attracting creative people and inspiring them in the search for solutions to the most complicated strategic tasks as well as focusing on continuous personal development. Everyone always admires his ability to keep a million problems in his head and maintain a dialogue on different issues at the highest intellectual level.
