Winter Adventures with HSE Extreme Sports Club

Karelia, Mount Elbrus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Krasnaya Polyana, and Andorra - this winter the Extreme Sports Club invites students, alumni and HSE staff members to set off for winter adventures. While many of the events have already become solid HSE traditions, some of them are being held for the first time. The projects are supported by HSE Department of Physical Training.

This year one of the club ski trips is being arranged by Elena Koleva, an international student from Bulgaria and a world class skiing instructor. She learned about the club while still in Bulgaria, decided to study in Russia and continue doing her favourite sports. She is now organizing a ski camp in Bulgaria as a member of the HSE international student organizing committee.

New Year in Karelia

December 30, 2016 – January 4, 2017

Winter trips to Karelia were one of the first projects of the Extreme Sports Club, which now has a 17-year history.
The participants will live in a cosy Karelian-Finnish style wooden house in the taiga forest, ride hunting skis and sleds, sing to the guitar in the evening, and have fun celebrating the New Year in this place of great atmosphere. Extreme sport enthusiasts will try freeriding, sledding or... kayaking!

Participants will also enjoy the atmosphere of the ancient Karelian-Finnish epos ‘Kalevala’ as well the entertainment programme, which has lots of contests, games, parties, quests and prizes from the club.

HSE New Year in Baku

December 30, 2016 – January 3, 2017

This will be the first trip of HSE students and staff members to Azerbaijan’s capital, which resulted in the first meeting with local traditions and natural wonders, as well as the New Year celebration. Participants who choose this trip will visit Yanar Dag (the Burning Mountain) and the Fire Temple of Baku, see prehistoric murals and rock paintings, and admire mud volcanoes. They say that walking in Baku at night time is an incredible experience. While Baku is compared with Paris and New York, at the same time it is unique.

Participants will live in double rooms in a 4-star hotel that is located within a 10-minute walk from Baku Eye.

The tour includes:

  • breakfast each day
  • celebration programme, gifts from the Extreme Sports Club and transfers to and from Baku’s airport
  • sightseeing tours

A series of traditional ski and snowboard club camps starts in January.

HSE Snow Camp in Andorra

January 2-8, 2017

This winter the Extreme Sports Club will head to Andorra for the first time. This country is considered one of the best places for skiing in Europe. Participants will enjoy:

  • 100 slopes
  • 3 snow parks
  • the opportunity to attend ski schools with groups at different levels
  • high mountain skiing: peak height reaches 2,500 meters!

The club guarantees that you won’t be disappointed by the slopes.

In addition to skiing, the trip also includes diving under the surface of a frozen lake, dog sledding, cross country skiing, and walks along the streets of Barcelona to view the Christmas decorations.

HSE Winter Camp in Georgia

January 2–8, 2017

Georgian ski resort Gudauri is already well known to many HSE students and staff members who have taken part in previous club projects.  This camp has been held four years in a row. This region features excellent service, developed infrastructure and, of course, delicious Georgian cuisine and Georgian hospitality. Tourists from all over Europe and North America come here for holidays.

Modern Doppelmayer ski lifts take skiers and snowboarders to the top. A number of trails for freeriding and backcountry skiing start from two major peaks – Sadzele (3,307 meters) and Kudebi (3,006 metres).

Heliskiing and heliboarding are also available. In addition, experienced instructors from the Extreme Sports Club will help those who are only beginning to learn skiing or snowboarding. 

The tour includes:

  • accommodation in rooms for two and three people located 300 metres from the ski lift (the centre of Gudauri)
  • breakfast and dinner (Georgian cuisine)
  • ski pass for 6 days of skiing
  • transfers to and from Tbilisi
  • sports insurance for all days of skiing
  • free ski lessons by professional instructors

New Year Snow Fest on Mount Elbrus

January 3–11, 2017

This is another traditional camp held by the Extreme Sports Club. The club has been organizing trips to Mount Elbrus for over 10 years, with club members noting that the Elbrus region and the resorts of the North Caucasus get better each year.

The Elbrus region is one of the best Russian resorts in terms of price and quality: meals on the mountain, ski passes, infrastructure, etc. here are much more affordable than at other Russian ski resorts.

HSE’s Extreme Sports Club is arranging this year’s open skiing and snowboarding trip to the slopes of Mount Elbrus and Mount Cheget. 

The trip includes:

  • hotel accommodation
  • two meals (breakfast and dinner)
  • transfer from Mineralnye Vody to the hotel and back
  • sports insurance
  • shuttle to the slopes
  • gifts from the club and its partners
  • club parties

HSE Snow Camp in Krasnaya Polyana

February 5–12, 2017

Krasnaya Polyana is an international level resort where all major competitions at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games were held. Krasnaya Polyana is characterized by modern infrastructure and top class ski facilities and attracts tourists from all over the world. It’s only 40 kilometres from the airport and the same distance from the Black Sea coast.

The trip includes:

  • 7 days at the best ski resort in Russia
  • daily skiing on prepared tracks and freeriding
  • photo shoot in swimsuits at 2,320 meters above sea level
  • training for beginners and freeriding for advanced riders

Skiing in Bulgaria

February 19–24, 2017 

Finally, there is a new club camp organized by Elena Koleva, an HSE student from Bulgaria and world class skiing instructor. The ski and snowboard camp will be held at the Pamporovo resort in Bulgaria.

‘Pamporovo is the southernmost ski resort in Europe and the sunniest mountain resort in Bulgaria’, says Elena. ‘It is located in the heart of the picturesque Rhodope mountains at the foot of the Snejanka peak (1,926 metres). Legend has it that Orpheus once lived there’.

Communication during the trip will be in both Russian and English.

The trip will feature:

  • 6 days with good travel companions
  • daily skiing (5 days)
  • training for skiers
