Nikita Anisimov was appointed Rector of HSE University early this July. In his address to HSE students and staff, he talks about his first working week, his short- and long-term plans, and the university’s vaccination efforts.

Dear colleagues,

I have just finished my first working week at HSE University. As expected, it was a busy one full of meetings with vice rectors, deans, and professors. I would like to thank my colleagues for their openness and friendliness. I also had a very productive meeting with the HSE Student Council. In my opinion, it is one of the most effective students’ unions in Russia. I am impressed by the quality and depth of the dialogue between the Rector’s Council and students. I promise to continue this tradition and hold regular meetings with the Student Council to discuss any issues or ideas the HSE community might have.

HSE University is a huge, complex, and lively entity. It will take some time for me to learn its ins and outs and for us to get to know each other. At the same time, I believe that all major universities have something in common. They share a unique academic atmosphere, which I know and cherish. I’m no stranger to HSE University. Far Eastern Federal University, which I headed for some time, launched a number of projects with HSE University in recent years, including a double-degree programme and mirror laboratories.

Our top two priorities right now are the admission campaign and preparing for the upcoming academic year. The COVID-19 situation and the Moscow Mayor’s instructions regarding the vaccination of staff are also on the university’s agenda. I will continue meeting with faculties’ staff and management, and also plan to meet with tenured professors, visit the Dubky Dormitory Complex, and talk to staff at the Perm, Nizhny Novgorod, and Saint Petersburg campuses.

I would like to emphasize that every Rector’s mission is to act in the interests of students, teachers, academics, and everyone who’s part of the university. It is an honour to be Rector of HSE University, an innovative institution that sets the standard and shares its expertise with other universities. HSE University is a unique analytical centre with a team of world-renowned professionals. For almost three decades, the university has established strong traditions and a distinctive spirit and culture rooted in self-discipline, honesty, and transparency. I respect this culture deeply and consider it my duty to maintain it. I trust that the HSE team will continue to support our work to strengthen the university’s position in Russia and worldwide.

Hari the Robot Recommends

We created Hari the robot and named him after Hari Seldon, a character who can predict the future in the works of science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. He is based on a machine-learning model that selects news based on the behavioural metrics of HSE website users.

Don’t worry — we don’t collect any personal data for this.

HSE Expands Cooperation with Chinese Universities

An HSE delegation, led by Rector Nikita Anisimov, visited China for negotiations with the administration of the country’s top universities. The parties agreed to expand bilateral scientific and educational collaboration and signed several documents. In particular, a strategic partnership agreement was established with Peking University, one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in China.
