High School Students from 46 Countries to Participate in the 2021 International Economics Olympiad

More than 200 high school seniors representing 46 national teams will compete for the title of the world's best young economists in July at the 4th International Economics Olympiad (IEO). The competition will be held online from July 26 to August 1. All the participants have won competitions in economics and financial literacy in their home countries. HSE University is the general partner of the Olympiad.

‘It is a great honour for us to host the International Economics Olympiad at the University of Latvia. This is the highest praise for the contribution of Latvian representatives to the development of the Olympiad. We will do our best to turn this competition into an unforgettable adventure for talented teenagers, help them learn a lot and make friends from all over the world,’ said Gundars Berzins, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics of the University of Latvia.

This year’s competition sets an all-time record for the number of participants, with national teams from 26 countries taking part: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, France, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, USA, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

The opening ceremony will take place on July 26, and the winners and runners-up in the individual and team competitions will be announced on August 1. Egils Levits, President of Latvia, will be present at the ceremony.

The Olympiad is being held for the fourth time this year. It was founded by HSE University and has previously been held twice in Russia (in Moscow and at HSE University – St. Petersburg) and in an online format in Kazakhstan. The IEO consists of three stages, each dedicated to a different topic: financial literacy, economics and solving business cases. The first two stages are scored individually, while in the last stage, the participants work in teams.

Russia will be represented by five high school seniors: Margarita Shevtsova (Moscow, ‘Second School’ Lyceum), Sofia Pirogova (Moscow, School No. 57), Boris Ivanchikov (Chelyabinsk, Physics and Mathematics Lyceum No. 31), Maxim Filippov (Moscow, HSE Lyceum), Mikhail Gryaznov (Krasnoyarsk, School of the Centre for Teaching Excellence).

In 2020, Russia’s Aleksander Lutsenko was named the overall winner of the Olympiad, while the rest of the Russian team won two gold medals and two bronze medals. Russia was also the bronze medallist in the team event.

Ivan Piskarev, a member of the Russian national team who won gold at both 2023 and 2024 International Olympiads in Informatics (IOI), has enrolled in the bachelor's programme ‘Applied Mathematics and Information Science’ at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. MIEM Student Wins Gold in DigitalSkills 2021

DigitalSkills 2021, the 3rd WorldSkills Industry Championship in the field of information technologies, took place in the Republic of Tatarstan at the end of September. Alexey Shadrunov, a student of HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM), won a gold medal in ‘Corporate Protection Against Internal Threats to Information Security’.

Eight HSE University Students Win Leaders of Russia Competition

The Leaders of Russia competition is the flagship project of the Russia — Land of Opportunity presidential platform. This year, 15,420 people signed up for the Student category of the competition, 127 of whom made it to the finals and 54 were named winners.

International High School Students Can Apply to HSE Global Scholarship Competition Until October 10

The Global Scholarship Competition is one of HSE University’s most significant international projects. In 2022, it will take place for the ninth time. More than 4,000 participants join the Competition every year, and the number is growing annually. This year’s Competition will run from October 20 to October 30. It offers a great opportunity to enrol at HSE University as early as this December.

The roundtable "Teaching Economics to High School Students: Curricula, Practices, Competitions" took place as part of the XXII April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development. Danil Fedorovykh, Deputy Vice Rector of HSE University and the President of the Executive Board of the International Economics Olympiad (IEO), initiated the session. Alexander Zhitkovskiy, Head of the Project Laboratory for Development of Intellectual Competitions in Economics (Faculty of Economic Sciences, HSE University), was the co-moderator.

International Economics Olympiad Participants Hold an Open Online Competition

The IEOx Winter Challenge, a two-week international online competition for junior and senior high school students, organized at the initiative of the International Olympiad in Economics, recently came to a close. Students solved a business case and economic tasks in addition to participating in a financial literacy game on a special online simulator.

Russian Participants Earn Three Gold Medals in the International Economics Olympiad

For the second year in a row, a team representing Brazil won the team-level gold medal of the International Economics Olympiad. Silver was taken by Indonesia’s team, while Russia’s team took bronze. In the assessment of individual participants, Russian participants won three gold medals and two bronze medals.

Third International Economics Olympiad Kicks Off Online

This year’s International Economics Olympiad for high school students started on September 7 with an opening ceremony that celebrated the biggest and most diverse group of students yet to compete in the Olympiad, now in its third year. 29 teams from 29 countries will compete this time. The event, which is being held online due to the pandemic, will last until September 13.
