Ivan Piskarev, a member of the Russian national team who won gold at both 2023 and 2024 International Olympiads in Informatics (IOI), has enrolled in the bachelor's programme ‘Applied Mathematics and Information Science’ at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. He first won the competition in September 2023 in Hungary, and then again in September 2024 in Egypt.

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is a globally renowned competition for high school students in the field of computer science. Participants from different countries compete individually, solving algorithmic problems and aiming to achieve the highest possible score. Unlike traditional school-based computer science competitions, the IOI does not prioritize difficulty, allowing participants to tackle multiple problems simultaneously and select the ones that are most suitable for their skills.

The members of the Russian team, consisting of four people, were selected based on the results of the All-Russian Olympiad for Schoolchildren in Computer Science and training camps. Last year, they all won gold medals, and one of them, Valery Rodionov, enrolled in HSE University. Ivan Piskarev was still in his final year of high school, but he scored the highest mark for a particularly difficult mathematical problem among all participants in the Olympiad.

This year, all Russian representatives also received gold medals. Ivan Piskarev said that he had studied in a math class at the Creative Laboratory ‘2×2’ in elementary school, and attended courses at the Centre for Pedagogical Excellence in Olympiad Information Science in the seventh grade.

‘These courses helped us to quickly develop our skills and make it to the final round of the All-Russian Olympiad for Schoolchildren in 2020, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic,’ said Ivan. ‘Thanks to my achievements in competitions, I participated in various training camps. During my eighth grade, I joined the Tinkoff club, which specialized in computer science training for Olympiads. All this helped me to qualify for the national team in 2023.’

The doors of the best universities were open to the gold medallist of the international Olympiad, and Ivan decided to study at HSE University.

‘I chose the Faculty of Computer Science because many other Olympiad winners are studying here, I like the format of classes, and the campus is conveniently located,’ he explained. ‘I plan to continue participating in student competitions and helping with organising school Olympiads. I have not decided what I want to do in my life yet, but I am sure it will be related to computer science.’

Lecturers at the Big Data and Information Retrieval School, Philipp Gribov and Ivan Safonov, led and trained the Russian national team. Both of them are graduates of HSE University, and Philipp won bronze at the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) while Ivan received gold.

Philipp Gribov

‘Russia has developed a comprehensive and highly effective system for training and selecting talented students to compete in the IOI. While training the team, I have conducted several training camps for potential members of the Russian national team. I can confidently say that our students are very skilled at Olympiad programming, and the four gold medals they have won both last year and this year are well-deserved,’ said Philipp Gribov.

The HSE Faculty of Computer Science actively promotes Olympiad programming for school students. This year, three of the four gold medal winners attended the Computer Science Summer School organised by the faculty. Additionally, three of the gold medallists are members of the Yandex club, with most of its instructors being students or graduates of the faculty.

Ivan Piskarev is the only high school student who is a member of this year’s Russian national team. Philipp Gribov believes that Ivan chose to enrol in the Faculty of Computer Science because it would provide him with the most promising education for his future programming career.
