‘Science Is International and Aims to Benefit All of Humanity’
On October 28–30, 2024, the autumn school ‘Advances in Decision Analysis’ took place at HSE University, organised by the HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis. Among its speakers were prominent Russian and international researchers, including Nobel laureate in Economics and centre member Eric Maskin. Professor Fuad Aleskerov, head of the Centre and of the Department of Mathematics at the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences, shared insights about the school.

Exchanging Research Findings
This year, our HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis celebrates its 15th anniversary. This division of HSE produces work at the forefront of scientific research across various fields and collaborates actively with universities worldwide. Nearly every year, we organise programmes like the autumn school ‘Advances in Decision Analysis.’ Its purpose is for scientists to learn about the latest global scientific developments. Science is not Russian, American, or British—it is international and aims to benefit all of humanity. We need to constantly exchange research findings. At the school, we receive the most recent scientific works of the highest quality, which is very important for our students and professors. Falling behind is dangerous, and to prevent this, our school exists.
Convenient Format
The online format is convenient for our school. During COVID, we adopted this technology because people could not travel. In the current political situation, limitations similarly exist, but the respect for our school is very high, so many international colleagues agreed to present online. During the autumn school, we held several online broadcasts, joined by participants from various universities in Russia and worldwide.
Speakers
The first speaker was Professor Arunava Sen, one of India’s leading scholars, who works at the Indian Statistical Institute. He explained how to redistribute teachers effectively, taking into account their preferences and the needs of schools, as some Indian schools have a surplus of teachers while others face a shortage. Next, a leading expert Ahmet Alkan from Sabancı University, Turkey, presented on generalised matching—a new study that uses grid representation for these matchings. Mario Guarracino from the University of Cassino, Italy, then gave an insightful overview of neural network analysis and its functioning methods. Eric Maskin, a Nobel laureate and member of our centre, also presented his findings. I was impressed with his work on classic voting models, where he made significant advancements.
Another member of our staff, Alexey Myachin, presented on entirely new models in pattern analysis, a field we have already been developing for about 20 years, yielding high-quality results. Michel Grabisch from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University spoke about generating linear orders, while Vladimir Makarenkov, head of the graduate programme in bioinformatics at the University of Quebec in Montreal, Canada, discussed bioinformatics and its practical applications. Boris Mirkin, a leading expert in data analysis, presented new K-means algorithm models. Finally, сolleagues from Sberbank, Dzhangir Dzhangirov and Andrey Vashevnik, shared insights on large linguistic models and risk assessment.
All presentations will soon be available on the website of the HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis.

The only way to detect weaknesses in one’s own ideas is to expose them to criticism from colleagues, says Eric Maskin, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2007, Chairman of the HSE International Advisory Committee, and chief researcher at the International Laboratory of Decision Choice and Analysis. The HSE news service recently spoke with him and Fuad Aleskerov, head of the Laboratory, about the the value of other people's opinions, joint research projects and opportunities for international cooperation in our time.
