Applications are open until 20 June for participation in the tourist trip along Karelia’s rivers, planned by the HSE’s Extreme Sports Club. The expedition is set for July 3-12. Even people who have never canoed before are welcome, as experienced instructors will explain everything you need to know, train you all, and – importantly – be right there alongside you.
‘The trip is not only open to students, graduates and HSE staff, but also to their friends from other universities, and anyone who is interested,’ one of the leaders of the Extreme Sports Club Garry Rutberg said. ‘But it’s best to hurry up and register, as places are limited as are tickets for the Moscow-Petrozavodsk train during the peak holiday season.’
The trip will cover the Syapsya-Shuya river and its rivulets, with participants taking catamarans and inflatable canoes, with kayaks on offer for people who are looking for new experiences and levels of freedom. This is the second difficulty level. People who are experienced at watersports will enjoy the opportunity to further hone their skills and simply relax in nature in good company, while novices will get theoretical and practical training and expert assistance. Risk and adventure in water during the daytime will give way to quiet evenings on sandy shores by rivers and forest lakes. In July water levels in Karelia’s rivers have fallen slightly, and the first mushrooms and berries (blueberries and red berries) appear in the forests, keen fishermen will be able to try their luck in the local water bodies.
The approximate route has already been put together. From Petrozavodsk, the group will arrive at the tourist camp on Saturday, where they’ll prepare for the hike: packing their things under Extreme Sports Club instructor supervision. Then there will be lunch and they will head by truck to the site where they will set up our catamarans and canoes. Then the water section of the hike will start. On Sunday they will take our first trip – about 10 km. First there will be short trips, and then the culmination will be the Sizovsky threshold, the first of the Shuisky cascade. Conditions permitting, they will then move on to the Sobachy. On Monday – they will take their next trip (about 10 km). That day will focus on training and a more thorough preparation for the rest of the expedition.
On Tuesday they’ll move to Koleno, also about 10 km. That day they will enjoy a full programme of activities. The trip will start with the Ignoilsky HPP, built by the Finns before the Second World War, which has been restored to working condition. Then they’ll see the treacherous Kenyaikosky, the rapid Sarikosky, the unpredictable Valoine and the complex Kumio thresholds: about 20 km in total. That day, weather permitting, the group will reach their end point near Sodder village, or the follow Shotozero lake for 2 km and enjoy its picturesque banks. On Friday, they will be taken back to base (100km). In the evening they’ll enjoy a banya and a celebratory meal. On Saturday they will have time to rest and will take the train back to Moscow.
