Skiers and Snowboarders Compete at HSE Snow Fest

On March 4, 2017, the winter sports HSE Snow Fest took place at the Kant alpine skiing centre. The event was organized by the Extreme Sports Club together with HSE student associations and received support from the Student Initiative Support Centre.

The snow festival has become a tradition at HSE and attracted about 650 participants this year. The programme offered activities for both experienced fans of winter sports and beginners, who had the opportunity to take lessons from the Extreme Sport Club instructors.

In addition, the guests took part in a quest game that included relay races, aiming accuracy contests, and a quiz on sports facts. The HSE cafeteria treated guests to hot tea and pies. Over 50 HSE students volunteered at the festival.

About 150 sports lovers decided to take part in the HSE Snow Fest competition. Snowboarders competed in slalom, and alpine skiers competed in giant slalom, one of the most popular winter Olympic sports.

Oleg Nedopekin, an HSE graduate, won gold among men in alpine skiing, Evgeny Vyshnevoy took silver, and Leonid Sharanov took bronze (both study at the Faculty of Business and Management). Egor Burkov (Faculty of Computer Science) took first place among men in snowboarding, Mikhail Khokhlov (MIEM) took silver, and Yury Kolomeitsev (HSE graduate) took bronze.

Olga Varskaya (Faculty of Business and Management) took first place in the women’s alpine skiing competition, followed by Irina Chaus (Faculty of Mathematics) and Valeria Baklanova (Faculty of Economic Sciences). Daria Gorshenina (Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design) won gold in snowboarding, while Anastasia Yunusova (MIEM) won silver, and Valeria Fedoseeva (HSE graduate) won bronze.

The winners received diplomas and prizes from HSE and Trajectoria, a chain of sporting goods stores.

Skiers and snowboarders also took part in a traditional tug-of-war. Those interested in learning who won this unusual contest should view the report that will be published by the event group very soon.

Vertikalny Mir (Vertical World) magazine served as HSE Snow Fest’s information partner.

Hari the Robot Recommends

We created Hari the robot and named him after Hari Seldon, a character who can predict the future in the works of science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. He is based on a machine-learning model that selects news based on the behavioural metrics of HSE website users.
