‘Now It Is Not Students Who Adapt to the University Environment, but Universities Adapting to the Student Lifestyle’

More than 450 students from more than 40 countries have graduated from 10 HSE Master's online programmes. To participate in the ceremony, graduates who received full-time higher education online were invited to the Moscow campus and met with classmates and teachers not online, but face-to-face.

HSE University launched its first online courses in 2013. Over the last ten years, HSE's online courses have been chosen by more than 6 million students worldwide. More than 350 HSE MOOCs, including 9 specialisations, 21 BSc and MA programmes, traditionally rank very highly among the top-rated platform courses.

In 2020, HSE University launched ‘Master of Data Science’, the first English-language online master's programme in the Russian Federation, which enrolled applicants from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, India, USA, Canada, China, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland and many other countries.

In 2022, the first students graduated: 17 out of 48 masters completed their studies with distinction. Online graduates emphasised the comfortable learning environment, the flexibility of the educational track and the programme’s relevance, which meets the needs of key employers in the industry. In the summer of 2023, students from 10 online master's degree programmes have already graduated. Today, the university delivers 21 programmes on the higher education market — 3 bachelor's and 18 master's.

Sergey Roshchin

‘We have more than 1,500 online degree students, and more than 15,000 students taking various HSE online courses,’ says Sergey Roshchin, HSE University Vice-Rector. ‘Three years ago, we were the first Russian university to introduce an English-language online programme and set a new trend in the domestic higher education market. The university's expertise became available to a global community of teachers and students, giving impetus to new cross-scientific and intersectoral collaborations. Our graduates decided to take a serious step, and were not afraid to get a degree online, where they found a lot of opportunities not only for professional growth, but also for building social ties within the global online community.’

Yulia Remezova

‘The HSE online campus not only meets the applicants' request for lifelong learning, but also offers a comfortable, flexible and individual approach to studying,’ says Yulia Remezova, Director for e-Learning at HSE University. ‘Learning without changing your way of life, without stopping your professional development, and while saving time and resources, is a new way of thinking about education. Now it is not students who adapt to the university environment, but universities adapting to the student lifestyle, where thesis preparation goes hand in hand with travel, lectures - with family vacations, and where careers are built not in spite of, but thanks to fully-fledged studies. I am convinced that modern education should not only be high quality, but also convenient. We follow this philosophy in our online campus.’

Hari the Robot Recommends

We created Hari the robot and named him after Hari Seldon, a character who can predict the future in the works of science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. He is based on a machine-learning model that selects news based on the behavioural metrics of HSE website users.
