of Russian Internet users involved in self-study choose online methods of education.

Over half of all respondents (54%) still prefer traditional ways of acquiring knowledge – offline.

37% of Russian internet users choose to combine offline and online education.

The data was obtained as part of the next wave of the Monitoring of Innovative Behavior of the Population, carried out by the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge. The study was conducted in late 2013, and covered 505 Russians aged 16-74 who had used Internet over the preceding month and were involved in self-study.

Hari the Robot Recommends

We created Hari the robot and named him after Hari Seldon, a character who can predict the future in the works of science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. He is based on a machine-learning model that selects news based on the behavioural metrics of HSE website users.

Open Day: The Future Begins Here

On March 2, an HSE Open Day for prospective undergraduates and specialist students will take place — one of the largest and most significant events for applicants, their parents, and the entire university. Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with students and representatives of educational programmes, plan their admission process, and immerse themselves in the HSE University atmosphere for a day. The event will be held in Russian.

On November 24, an English-language course will begin on Coursera called ‘The Economics of Transition and Emerging Markets,’ taught by Marek Dabrowski, a well-known Polish economist and professor in HSE’s Department of Applied Economics.

Future education: Content Tailored to the Student

Research Fellow at the HSE’s Center of Education Quality Monitoring Dmitry Abbakumov, author of the ‘Theory and practice of computerized testing’ lecture course and developer of the ‘Adaptivity Guide’ software which makes it possible to adapt e-courses to students’ abilities. He recently gave a presentation about his research at The 2014 Computerized Adaptive Testing Summit at Princeton and at Edcrunch in Moscow.
